"Ang Doctrina Christiana" Manila 1593
"DOCTRINA CHRISTIANA"
The First Book Printed in the Philippines, Manila, 1593
Title in Spanish:
"Doctrina Christiana, en lengua espaƱola y tagala, corregida por los Religiosos de las Ordenes. Impresa con licencia, en S. Gabriel, de la Order de S. Domingo. En Manila, 1593".
Luigi Banzi, a bookseller form Bologna, is said to have purchased it from a school teacher of the Romagna region some time late in 1942 or early 1943. It had belonged to a peasant family whose forebears had lived or visited the Philippines in the sixteenth century.
The book was sold to a Paris collector who in turn sold it to William H. Schab of New York in 1946, and was then acquired by Lessing J. Rosenwald, millionaire bibliophile of Philadelphia, who donated it to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. the following year.
